The Red Bull Music Academy hits London in 2010 and two artists from Romania are the Academy’s newest recruits. Here we find out more about the chosen pair.
Daniel Stanciu – a.k.a Minus
Minus, a computer programmer from Bucharest, combines mountains of bass with hypnotic melodies and he has already released three EP’s on the Romanian net label Archiva 7. His style ranges from 8-bit and old school electro to dub, down tempo and ambient music with vague references to maths, fuzzy childhood memories and old video games.
But it's his live performances that have really caught the eye and he has been impressing on the festival circuit both at home in Romania and all over Europe, where he can be heard dubbing out his tracks and reworking live versions.
Minus has performed at the TMBase (Timisoara), Rokolectiv (Bucharest), Wilsonic (Bratislava), Today’s Art (The Hague) and Numusic (Norway) festivals, with the promise of many more to follow. And he has recently joined up with the Romanian bass and keyboard player, Ion Dumitrescu, for a live show that blissfully blends Nintendo tunes and nostalgia.
Vlad Caia
Vlad is a Scandinavian/Romanian, whose primary focus is on house music with what he describes as "deep bass that blows your lungs out". He has already released several tracks on labels such as Horizontal, DSOR, Next Dimension and Dirty Box and Vlad also plays with Bucharest-based Funknutt collective.
Caia’s sound has influences from the likes of James Brown and Prince, which creates a smooth backdrop to the heavy bass overtones and his DJ sets include mash-ups from Baby Ford and Karisma to name but two. His musical perspective has been influenced by many factors, including the emerging Romanian club scene and Vlad is a keen student of electronic sounds, club culture and the classical piano.
London awaits the arrival of Minus and Vlad, with their original and distinctive sounds and welcomes them to the Red Bull Music Academy 2010.
