The O’Neill Cold Water Classic series has taken in spectacular surf venues in Tasmania, Scotland, South Africa and Canada, and now arrives in California for the last round of 2009, for what is a six-star WQS event this year, from November 2–8.

Steamer Lane, in Santa Cruz, California, is known for its great breaks and deep-rooted surf culture, and local surfer and event ambassador Jason ‘Ratboy’ Collins explains its appeal.

“Steamer Lane is a world-class wave,” says Collins. “It’s a very powerful, long, perfect point break that can produce barrels, big air sections and lots of high-performance surfing.

“It’s a great thing to have a six-star prime WQS event on my home break,” he added.

WQS hopefuls Wiggolly Dantas (pictured) and Rudy Palmboom will be doing their best to increase their points haul in the WQS shake-up, and among the other big names will be Jordy Smith and Adriano de Souza. The latter is still third behind Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson in the ASP World Tour rankings after the Rip Curl Pro Search in Portugal last week, and will be hoping to make an impression ahead of the last world title event in Hawaii in December.
