It's been a rough start to the year for Aksel Lund Svindal as he battles illness and fights the impulse to get out on the slopes...

First things first, I still don’t feel great but at least I don’t have a fever like I did yesterday. It's really bad timing to get sick the night before one of the toughest races in the winter. Waking up at 6.30am, it can be hard to tell how you’re feeling but as soon as I started skiing I could tell something wasn't right. As I’ve spent all day in bed, I’ve had plenty of time to enjoy winter sports on TV. It's only a small TV, but it has lots of channels and time is flying by as I watch the alpine skiing and tour de ski. It's been a crazy start to 2012 for Marcel Hircher, after winning three races in a row he’s on fire. It's also cool to see the final of tour de ski and Dario Cologna the winner once again. I guess I’m a sport freak and I enjoy watching almost as much as taking part - when I’m sick I do prefer watching though.
January 11 - Wengen
I felt a lot better waking up this morning. Finally! I wasn’t sure if I would last all the way to the finish on the course - this is the longest downhill course on the tour - so I took it a bit easy. It seemed I got the same bug that's all over Norway and the drugstores are sold out of antibiotics back home. It's really bad luck considering I’ve spent less then two days in Norway over the past three months…

Sucks to be sick when this is your office. Still not 100%, but good enough to be back on start.
January 13 - Wengen
I'm finally starting to get healthy again but sometimes when you want it too much you’re not smooth and not fast. I’m spending the whole afternoon inside resting up for tomorrow. Don’t wanna get worse again now that I finally felt better on the hill today.

Here I am sitting on the train down from Wengen with the strange feeling that I’ve been here before. The downhill didn’t go as planned this time, although it was an impressive race. 3,8000 spectators were in attendance and there was some amazing scenery. It's races like this and Kitzbuhel that make our sport what it is. Big thanks to the Swiss and Austrian people that come out and cheer and make these races what they are.
All the best,
Aksel
